The short answer

Apply on Pehchan, at e-Mitra or at the registrar's office, then go to the registrar with your documents. Both bride and groom must appear before the registrar. The fee is ₹10 within 30 days of the wedding and ₹100 after that. You can register at any time after the marriage, including marriages from before 2009.

Where to register

  • With the registrar of the area where the marriage took place: the gram panchayat in villages, or the municipality, municipal council or corporation in towns.
  • Or with the registrar of the area where the couple has lived for at least 30 days before applying.
